From last weeks lecture, we saw in the May 2011 Sensis report that 79% of people are using the internet everyday. The genii/geniuses at Google realised that most people use their computers to access the internet more than anything else. This is personally true for me. It has become almost routine for me to turn on my computer, open up Chrome, check my 4 email accounts, check my shares, and then turn the computer off straight after. The problem is that it takes me 4 minutes to start my computer. 4 minutes per day adds up to 24 hours a year. This is 1 whole day! That is ridiculous! Google's solution to this is Chrome OS. Chrome OS is an operating system the boots straight to a web browser. This cuts down loading time significantly. Google claims that the netbooks it will sell (Chromebooks) will have a loading time of 7 to 8 seconds. Imagine that!
Not only will Chrome OS be extremely fast, but it will also have most of the functionality of a normal PC. Another major advantage of Chrome OS is that most information will be stored on the world wide web, and this means you can access it from any computer, and you will not lose your information if your computer breaks down.
I don't know about you, but I am excited about where Google is taking this. So what do you think? Has it gotten your attention? Do you think it will take off? Would you consider getting a Chromebook?
If you have more time, you should watch this demo of Chrome OS.
It's a great idea. But is it really that new? My iPad starts up within a second or two when I need to use it. So does my smartphone. My Mac is almost as fast.
ReplyDeleteI think the problem here that Google are solving is "Windoze", the default operating system on most PCs. The sooner we have an alternative, the better! :)
Good point. I never thought about it that way. I guess I just don't have enough experience with mac. Probably because I am a gaming geek, so I side with Windows.
ReplyDeleteThinking about it this way, a Chromebook would just be a bigger iPad or iPhone, with a keyboard.
